I am stuck between two different interests: paranormal and science. The paranormal indicates that certain entities (gods, ghosts, or demons) can violate the laws of the nature. Science advocates that the paranormal does not exist.

Whether the paranormal is real or not and whether science can prove the paranormal to exist or not I am still interested in both. I like a good ghost story and I like to review local hauntings in the state of Oklahoma. The X-Files was my favorite show but now I favor CSI.

I can assert this: Science is highly underrated in our society. We tend to value the advances Science offers like the Internet, TV, Microwaves, DVDs, etc. Yet when Science offers evidence or theories that disprove our cherished beliefs we tend to blow Science off. If Science is a good force when it provides us luxuries and medications but a bad one when it offends us then we suffer from Selective Science. I do not think that is wise.

In the magazine Skeptical Inquirer Elizabeth Sherman, a professor of biology at Bennington College in Bennington, Vermont, has an article titled Science and Antiscience in America: Why It Matters. This article is on page 32, Volume 33, Nunber 1 of the March/April 2009 issue of Skeptical Inquirer.

Sherman boldly asserts that, “If science doesn’t inform the decisions we make, the consequence is that people suffer.” I agree with her. Science uses evidence to develop conclusions. The more evidence we have the better conclusions we have.

Science uses the scientific method which holds nothing sacred. It is the most objective and unbiased method we emotional human beings have to better understand ourselves and our place in the universe. Science leads to better thinking and to better ways of solving problems.

Science needs to be taken seriously even when it bruises our egos or swats our cherished beliefs. Science helps us evolve. If we did not have Science we would still be stuck in the stone ages fighting over fire and trying to manufacture a wheel. Science has to be accepted as a whole in order to be beneficial. We do a disservice to ourselves if we accept the luxuries and gadgets Science provides but then deny Science when it disproves our beliefs.
